Long term: Convince someone great to run for office who might consider it, promise them the maximum donation and some fundraising help if they do, and when they do run, do that.
Short term / smaller effort: Donate directly to great individual candidates very early, especially candidates for state legislatures (and just below state legislature on the importance meter, IMO, would be candidates for governor and for the US House). Very early = long before the primary.
Also, donate to left-progressive organizations that get involved in primaries, that endorse candidates and give them real support in the form of actual people-time, and that help recruit candidates. PCCC and Democracy for America, for example.
