In IE6, "width" actually means "min-width", so if you have content inside the block that needs it to become wider, it will become wider.

That's different from the problem I was having, which wasn't an issue with the width of the container block, it was simply whether the text would wrap or extend several screenfuls to the right and force horizontal scrolling.
