Santa Fe and Albuquerque

I'm in Santa Fe for several days for listgirl & Elena's wedding, and I'll probably have some free time. Suggest somewhere I should go, something I should do or see, someone I should meet, somewhere I should eat, or any permutation of the above?

I'm sharing a hotel room with mechristy, mostlylies, and rekling. Last night I dreamed that I was away somewhere, sharing a room with the three of them, for an event put on by mutual friends. I feel cheated by my dream-brain.

So, it being sukkot, there is the Cathedral of St. Francis (observe the front door carvings and find the oblique reference to the Jewish funding that went into building the cathedral).

I haven't had time yet to look for things, but this morning in between brunch and getting the wedding party ready we had a couple of hours and wandered downtown, and I asked "what's that church in scaffolding" so we went to it and then I saw the name and realized it was the place you'd commented on. We saw no sign of Jewish funding.

Then as we were leaving a tour bus stopped on the road in front so we stopped to listen, and he explained all about it and pointed it out. The reason we hadn't even had a chance to see it was that because of the restoration work, the main entrance is closed and we came in through the side door. There's scaffolding over the front but you can see if it through the bars if it's pointed out.

Wake up before dawn just north of ABQ and go up in a hot air balloon..

We went to the Balloon Fiesta today but the winds were too high and there were no balloons up. Our tickets are still good for admission any remaining day so we may try to go again. And there was a good fireworks show.

That was a good suggestion! I saw a little 10 minute movie about her and a shorter one about her identity in photographs of her, as well as paintings - though some of the paintings I most wanted to see are not on display; apparently they keep a lot in storage and rotate the gallery space 3 times a year. Gallery space, BTW, that seems to have been funded by someone named Esther :)

Also, on the way there I serendipitously stumbled into this place and fell in love with these paintings based on sketches made while riding city buses. At the Georgia O museum they had quotations from her on the walls and some of them helped me figure out why I like the art I like.

There are a bunch of museums downtown which are free on Friday evenings. You can probably get lots of recs for downtown SF. Outside of downtown, Harry's Roadhouse is awesome for breakfast/brunch (and probably makes a good dinner too). A day-trip to Bandelier National Monument and Los Alamos (visit the Black Hole) is worthwhile if you have the time.

We were just in Santa Fe! Martin's uncle volunteers for a neat place called the Santa Fe Complex, which may have an art/technology event going on while you're there, often on friday nights. The 18th is the opening of their next full art show, though you probably won't stay that long. It's a bit of driving, but we also helped make a piece in a show at the sculpture ranch, though it may have blown down by now. There's an obscene number of galleries on Canyon Rd. Hiking up near the ski resort is pretty, and the only body of water nearby is the Rio Grand. Oh, and we didn't get to see it, but they just finished a gigantic new farmers market building.

rek and my other roommates are going home on the 13th and I'm going home on the 14th.

Unfortunately, no luck on the Sculpture Ranch. Their web site says their only regular visiting hours are Saturdays 1-5 (which would've been during the wedding), and "by appointment", call or email. I sent an email and left a voicemail but no responses yet and I'm leaving tomorrow so I think I will probably miss it.

You might want to see my friend Ondine and her family (4 sons including Jean Paris who is 7 years old and my godson). They used to live in Boston and now live in Santa Fe.
