coslinks, now delicious!

Many of you know that I have another livejournal, coslinks, where I post almost-daily links to things I think people should read or would be amused by. Some of you even read it :)

I started coslinks because I wanted to start using del.icio.us, but when I finally got around to trying to create a del.icio.us account about a year ago, I found that someone had recently grabbed the name "cos". I hate to use any public or social online thing where I can't be "cos", so I gave up on del.icio.us, but I wanted to post & share links like that, so a few months later I started coslinks.

Now that I've been posting links as "coslinks" for 8 months here on LiveJournal, I thought about del.icio.us again and realized I wouldn't mind being coslinks there, too. So, for the new year, there are now two coslinks - the one here on LJ, and http://del.icio.us/coslinks. On LJ I'll still limit it to the links I want people to see. On del.icio.us, I'll add a lot more - just about anything I read that I may want to find later, or tag for the community for whatever reason. I'll probably also slowly add many of the links I've saved over the years, because it looks like a better place to save them than a text file, and tags perhaps more useful than grep for finding them.

that's so strange... i'm a different person everywhere i go. i love to play with identity ... and on the internet it's so easy.

I have friends who deliberately use a different name in every online context, so that people can't match them up. I've been friended by people whose userinfo is so anonymized, in one case it was someone I was dating and I couldn't identify her. So I definitely know people do that.

I really hate hiding, and further than that, I love connecting. I can't compartmentalize at all - I have trouble keeping track of what information belongs where. I frequently connect people I know from completely unrelated contexts, largely because I enjoy doing so. I can't project different personalities, and trying to do it would feel strange and icky. I feel most comfortable having my one identity, and knowing that everyone I interact with knows that identity. I don't have to keep track of context, I can revel in the connections, I can keep one mental set of public vs. private (in continuum), and so on.

i often feel i'm the worst kept secret. anyone who knows me in person, can usually figure out all the other venues.. and usually if people ask, i tell them. (see creepy guy note below)

i'm not sure that i am projecting different personalities, just acknowleging them. do you have a "Phone voice", or noticed that other people have them? Likely there's an "Internet voice" as well. Sherry Turkel has some very interesting reads on this (and I believe that Deborah Tannen does also)

different people bring out different parts of me, that's not good or bad, just different. they are all part of the same person, just another facet. I have also found that I communicate differently depending on the medium. I am very different in the way that I express my Ideas and experiences on LJ than e-mail, than video conference, than chat, or even SMS. I believe that the medium creates an opportunity for expression that may or may not be possible...

I have also had creepy people from the internet and other places show up in RL. and I have a career, conservative co-workers, (many who feel that blacklight bowling is risque... ) i've heard of LJ's being used against people in custody suits, etc. I don't have kids, and I don't plan on running for office, but at the same time, I want to take care. The world is big and bad out there.
