Wiffiti me!

I've got my own Wiffiti screen for my travels. It's running on my laptop, so it's off when I'm actually using it (unless I can figure out a way to keep the network connection alive when I switch users on OS X - anyone know how?), but most of the rest of the time I'll leave it up (in the backseat, at whoever's house I'm staying at, ...)

Text my Wiffiti screen by texting to 87884 with C7 followed by a space at the beginning of your message.

Update: I mostly solved the network problem, but not entirely. In the meantime, here's a photo taken at ambrosiaoferis's apartment, showing the first message someone other than me texted to my Wiffiti display:

US only, I think. Maybe Canada too. Getting more shortcodes, for other countries, is expensvie, I think it'll be a while before we do that.

It doesn't have to be a shortcode.
I don't consider a shortcode to be "internationally addressable" since they vary by network.

Fast User Switching may be what you're looking for with the network connection aliveness... or perhaps making the Wiffiti a system-level process, rather than a user-level...

Nope, Fast User Switching is what I'm talking about - when I switch users, whichever user I switched from loses its network connectio, which i can't turn back on until I switch back to it.

right -- so, the need to make the wiffiti application a *system* level launch -- rather than a *user* level launch.

In other words, start at boot, rather than start at login...

No, I don't have all the secrets to doing this, but I imagine Mac OS X Hints may provide some clues.

Oh wow, they haven't posted anything new in weeks! Yeah, I saw that when it first got posted. It's kind of funny. First of all the startup isn't named "Wiffiti" and Wiffiti isn't the only thing it does; secondly, it's moderated, so there's no comment spam (and why would comment spammers want to spam something google doesn't pagerank by, anyway?). Oh well, it's not like you have to know what you're talking about to post on memepool :)

I thought "keep network connection alive when switching users" was a System Preference. I don't remember which page it's on (Accounts? Network?)

It turned out to be in my PPP settings (since I'm on bluetooth dialup networking), separate from the "disconnect when logging out" option. It fooled me by not working initially, but now it seems to.
